Best New Gaming Laptops 2012

In this post we’ll review three new gaming laptops that have really caught our eye for 2011 leading into 2012.

What to look for:

CPU

If you’re going to spend some serious cash on a new gaming laptop, then you’ll want to have a CPU that is up-to-date and will play today’s latest games. As of today we’re recommending gaming laptops with Intel’s i7 4 core processors. Here’s a list of all of their recent laptop processors so you can be sure to get one with 4 cores rather than 2.

GPU

You can have the beefiest laptop in the world but if your graphics card isn’t up to par, then you’ll bottleneck quickly on what you’re able to do. If you need to compare card, then here’s a great site which has an entire section dedicated to the comparison of laptop graphics cards.

Ram

Look for a laptop with at least 8GB of ram and preferably one that can go up to 16GB. More ram is always better, right?

ASUS Republic of Gamers G74SX-DH71 or G74SX-AH71 Gaming Laptop?

Two gaming laptops you should definitely look at are the G74SX-DH71 and the G74SX-AH71 from Asus which are both fairly similar to each other.

Here’s a quick breakdown of their specifications:

G74SX-DH71

GPU: NVIDIA® GTX 560M – 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM

Additional Features: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v3.0, 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, 750GB 7200RPM hard drive, DL DVD±RW/CD-RW, 2.0 Megapixel camera, Stereo speakers with EAX 5.0, digital array microphone, 8-in-1 card reader, and a 2-year limited International hardware warranty (differs by country so be sure to check) and a 1 year accidental damage protection warranty.

Overall:

The AH71 comes with the same processor, graphics card, 4 more GB of ram, but it has a smaller HD which may be a deal breaker for some. At nearly $200 less in price it seems to be worth it to go with the less expensive model.

Alienware M18X AM18X-6732BAA

In the past Alienware laptops have admittedly been expensive for what you get and while the M18x is still a bit pricey you do get a lot of really cool features for your money.

Overall you don’t get quite as much performance with this Alienware model but you do get a larger screen, more ram compatibility, and everything that normally comes with Alienware laptops including AlienFX Lighting Controls, AlienTouch Touchpad Controls, AlienTactX Macro Key Controls, and AlienFusion Power Management.
